A special United In Learning Event!
- Wednesday February 15 -

Join Affirm United/S’affirmer Ensemble and Affirming Connections to learn about the malicious misinformation campaign and threats that have been launched against the drag and 2SLGBTQ+ communities across Canada—and what you can do.

This is especially important for faith leaders and faith communities to know how to faithfully respond to these troubling issues.

Our panelists will:

* address some of the dangerous myths circulating around drag, trans and other queer identities;

* look at recent Canadian online and in-person instances of anti 2SLGBTQ+ hate, some of which include Christian groups;

* explain how these connect to wider hate, racist, and extremist anti-vaccination movements.

Our panelists will also share what you and your community of faith can do to bring a faithful public response in your context, as well as support and care for those who need it.

Registration is FREE and required to attend.

Carol Fest Sign Ups

Calling all Calgary Choirs,

With the festive season right around the corner, start prepping those pipes and practice hitting those high notes as the Calgary Carol Festival is quickly approaching. Once again proceeds from the festival will help the Calgary Foodbank. This year we have decided to add a 4th night to accommodate more choirs and to increase the proceeds towards the Calgary Foodbank.

Admission to the Carol Festival is free with money and non-perishable donations accepted at the door. There are no fees for choirs to perform in the Carol Festival as your participation is regarded as a donation itself to the cause and the Calgary community.

Please use the supplied Calgary Carol Festival 2022 registration form to sign up

In Memorium

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved church elder, Ronnie de la Ronde on August 16, 2022.

Born August 7, 1922, Ronnie was gifted with a long life, and achieved rare and precious life milestones  – like celebrating his much anticipated 100th birthday just two weeks ago, and his 73rd wedding anniversary with his beloved wife Kay this year.

Ronnie was a special father, grandfather, great-grandfather; a dear friend; and a WWII veteran. He had a most remarkable life and will forever be remembered.

Please keep Kay and family in your prayers.

2022 Pride parade

The City Wide Pride Service (that was hosted by Knox three years ago and celebrated online the past two years) will be held at Scarboro United Church this year on the first Sunday of Pride Week on August 28th.

Everyone is invited to attend in-person or optionally watch online. Available online: click to watch the Livestream on YouTube here.

The theme of this year's interfaith worship experience is Many Voices, One Heart and will feature guest speakers and more. For more  information see the Affirming Connections website.

We have received notice from Affirming Network of Faith Communities that they will not be participating in the 2022 Calgary Pride Parade. Members of the Knox congregation that have marched in the parade under the Affirming Network banner and expecting to do so again this year will have to make alternate  arrangements or celebrate as parade spectators.

Please note: the parade route runs east on 9th Avenue from 6th Street SW to 4th Street SE this year. ( It does not run along 6th Avenue in front of Knox like it has in the past. )

Looking for Host Families

We do need host families who can provide the accommodation for Ukrainian newcomers to Calgary for the first 2-4 weeks or more if possible. This is priority number 1 as many people arriving in the next two months and need temporary stay before they get a job and can rent.

Avenue 15 Youth Shelter and Safe Way Out- Rainbow Railroad

My work, Avenue 15 youth shelter, is looking for sandwich donations. We house up to 18 youth between 12-17 years of age. We also provide harm reduction supplies, clothing, and food to community members of all ages who are in need. We are the only homeless shelter in Calgary that is specifically LGBTQ2S inclusive (gender neutral washrooms, gender neutral bedroom floors, we introduce ourselves with pronouns). This is in line with the unfortunate statistic that up to 40% of homeless youth and young adults are LGBTQ2S. In the summer, we will have many more visitors-we are hoping to be able to give folks sandwiches in a bag lunch as they come to our door. We are also looking for donations of bottled water(to give to street entrenched people who have difficulty holding onto belongings) and gently used t-shirts/tank tops and shorts in teenager sizes(all genders and sizes that teens wear).  Our address is 938 15 Ave SW (across from Grace Presbyterian). I can be reached at kmckee@growwithtrellis.ca or via text/call at 587-894-2294.

As well here is information that Edgar from the Centre of Newcomers has passed on about Afghan Refugees and requests support for the petition.  Safe Way Out - Rainbow Railroad

CALGARY ALLIANCE FOR THE COMMON GOOD

Mental Health: Lack of concern in the area of mental illness and addiction have been a growing concern in Calgary. With the ongoing pandemic still active here, many experts are concerned about an ‘echo pandemic’ of mental health concerns. We have identified three areas which can help to make significant positive changes in the mental health of all Albertans. Areas which immediately need added supports and greater attention are: trauma informed care, recognition and support for those who grieve, and crisis intervention that supports, rather than punishes, the person in crisis. For further information, go to www.calgarycommongood.org/campaigns and look for the “Get Involved – Training Resources” page. Please also sign the petition on trauma-informed care at www.calgarycommongood.org/takeaction.

WHAT THE HELL?

Affirming Connections has produced and launched the video, What the Hell? It addresses the fear of hell that is still prevalent in some religious communities, and interrogates the roots of this fear. The video features interviews with clergy and community leaders across Canada to ask, What the Hell?! Interviewees included Chris Mah Poy, Murray Pruden, Julia Kimmett, Nick Coates, Harry Maier, Spirit River Striped Wolf, Trevor Potter and many others.

the End of the Rainbow Foundation

The End of the Rainbow Foundation is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ2+ refugees by bringing them to Canada. It costs about $15,000 to bring an LGBTQ2+ refugee to Calgary and assist that person in their first year here. While all refugees are vetted by the Canadian government, it is through private sponsorship and not government funding that these refugees can be brought here and establish a life in their new country.

During the pandemic, the normal avenues for fundraising, such as special events, have been made very difficult.

To help, please donate through the foundation’s website or CanadaHelps.

Centre for Newcomers

The Centre for Newcomers has a club for women who like to knit: every Thursday from 1:00-4:00PM. Clients are immigrant women. All required protections are provided for facilitators and clients. The Centre is looking for a woman to facilitate the program on site (999 36 St NE, #1010). If interested, please contact Edgar Ayala.

The program of Vulnerable and LGBTQ people from Centre for Newcomers needs winter stuff such as jackets, scarfs, gloves, toques, winter boots. For women and men, all sizes are ok. Email Edgar Ayala.
